Explore Energy with the Monroe County Energy Challenge!
Come out to the Bloomington Farmers Market, June 27 from 9:30am-12:30pm to EXPLORE ENERGY with the Monroe County Energy Challange!

Wager on which items use the most energy. See if you've got what it takes to toast a piece of bread by pedal power. Watch a band of pirates discover the treasures of conservation. And then take home what you learn.

Join this fun, interactive event to learn about energy, utility rebates, and how you can save money and energy at home to help the community win $5 million.

10am - Filet-a-Fridge - see how an old refrigerator is recycled
11am - Treasure Trove of Conservation Cove: A Pirate's Tale
12pm - Stationary Energy Bike Race

Volunteers needed too!

The Monroe County Energy Challenge (MCEC) is a community-wide effort to reduce energy use in order to win the
$5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize.  To win, we need to save more energy in houses, schools, and government buildings than just 49 other communities across the country.  Monroe County is the only community competing from the State of Indiana.

New Indiana Academic Standards Bring Changes in Instruction and Assessment

The new Indiana Academic Standards for College and Career Readiness engage students in high-quality, rigorous learning outcomes. Daily instruction and performance expectations will become more noticeable through a variety of instructional shifts in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy. These shifts in English Language Arts involve reading as much nonfiction as fiction, reading more challenging material closely, discussing reading using evidence, writing non-fiction using evidence, and increasing academic vocabulary. The shifts in Mathematics include learning more about fewer topics (focus), building skills across grade levels (coherency), developing fluency in performing math through speed and accuracy (fluency), knowing and doing math (deep understanding), using math in the real world (application), and thinking fast and solving problems (dual intensity). Here is a "backpack" overview of the instructional shifts for parents regarding what the shifts look like, what will be expected of students, what parents can expect to see come home with their student, and what parents can do to help their childrten with the shifts.

In addition to the instructional changes taking place in your childs classroom, students in grades 3 through 8 are being administered Acuity Readiness assessments. These assessments are based on the new academic standards and serve in two capacities. First, the assessments help teachers and students understand how their skills are progressing toward the standards and identify instructional next steps through the curriculum. Secondly, the assessments provide students with practice on the new item types they will see on the ISTEP+ multiple choice/select response assessment in the spring of 2015. Parents may view the Indiana Department of Education's Experience College and Career Ready website and take the Experience CCR Assessment to gain a better idea as to the level of rigor the new standards present for students and experience the item types.

Colts in Motion!

Colts in Motion!
We are kicking off the school year with the Indianapolis Colts and the United States Marines. On Wednesday August 13th from 5:00-7:00 pm, the Edgewood campus will be open to the community to visit the Colts in Motion mobile museum and see the United States Marines Humvee with Sgt. Cunningham. The Colts in Motion will be

located in the junior high north parking lot with at least one inflatable for students. There will be DJ music played by Edgewood teacher Troy Guthrie and a Marine pull up challenge bar with the Humvee located near the football practice field. There will be snacks and water provided by RBBCSC to all community members and the entire event is free of charge. We want to welcome back our school family by bringing the Indianapolis Colts to our students.

In conjunction with the Colts in Motion the high school will have their “Meet Your Teacher,” event beginning at 7:00.

It’s going to be a great time for the entire family. So please come out, bring your children from ALL grades to see the Colts in Motion mobile museum, honor the U.S. Marines, and have a snack while listening to music. EVERYTHING IS FREE OF CHARGE! It’s our way of having a kickoff for the school year and saying thank you to the families of our students. We look forward to seeing everyone!

EECC Science Night

EECC students and their families enjoyed conducting various hands on  science experiments during Science Night on Tuesday evening, March 4th,  2014.  Students experimented with motion by creating bottle and straw  rockets and conducting balloon races.    Students created shaving cream  rain clouds and fireworks in a jar to experiment with density.    Other  experiments involved erupting volcanos, creating tornados, and making  bubble snakes and lava lamps.  Edgewood High School robotics club  students engaged preschoolers with robots.  The EECC PIE Team, Edgewood  High School Robotics club students, and EECC staff worked hard to ensure  Science Night was such an awesome experience for our future scientists.
