“Imagine” Lunch in Our Courtyard

courtyard

We are frequently visited by parents, grandparents, and even some aunts and uncles who are joining their students for lunch in our Garden Gate Café. We are always happy to have guests in the Garden Gate, but now spring has arrived we have an option for those joining us for lunch: visit our courtyard off the Crayon Hallway to take advantage of al fresco dining in a beautiful and quiet setting.

The picture above is good, but it does not do justice to the actual setting. Mrs. Vicky Entrekin, one of our two day-time custodians, has recently put in the time and effort to welcome spring to this lovely space. As the temperatures rise we will place the shade umbrellas out to protect courtyard visitors from the sun. So, plan a day off or just play “hooky” and stop by! The space is ready and we love lunch guests!

Breakfast Buddies

Breakfast Buddies“Breakfast Buddies”

Jerry Pittsford

Last week we hosted two sessions of breakfast buddies that were extremely well-attended. Both the Tuesday and Thursday sessions filled our Garden Gate Café to near capacity. We could not tell who was more proud: the fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and other significant male role models who came to eat with the students or if it was the students who were so pleased to show off the men they admire! Regardless, we were simply thrilled to see so many happy faces gathered together.

The event was organized by Family Involvement Coordinator Beth Krouse, and our PTO assisted in providing resources and helping hands for serving the food. The underlying purpose for the event is to get the men in our students’ lives to recognize the importance of reading and the part they play in supporting the educational development of the children they love.

Longtime Herald-Times sports columnist, editor, and author Bob Hammel was our guest speaker. Not one of our students would recognize the significant part Mr. Hammel played in chronicling one of the most successful periods of time in the history of IU sports: the Rose Bowl season, IU swimmer Mark Spitz and his record number gold medals, the Yeagley years in soccer, and, yes, the Knight years in basketball. Time did not permit Mr. Hammel the opportunity to tell many stories, but he did make offer some great insights on cultivating a love for the written word as both a father and grandfather. Mr. Hammel’s son and daughter have both achieved success in their own professions, and his grandchildren are likewise primed for success. Certainly he can be forgiven a boast or two, but the one that drew the most laughter was that all his grandchildren, like his children, have or will graduate from IU, despite the fact his son and daughter both married Purdue graduates!
